Get Charged Up – Charging Stations in Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe community remains committed to preserving the clarity of Lake Tahoe.

September 25, 2023 by Camille Duvall

In 2008, Tesla released the completely electric Roadster. It could travel 245 miles on a single charge, and the prospect of developing charging stations became the focus of engineers in the Bay Area.

When Ford’s Volt debuted in 2011, charging stations were only in the garages of mostly movie stars in Los Angeles. The term ‘range anxiety’ arose from how people in battery-powered cars felt about long-distance travel.

In the early 2000’s there were only one or two charging stations at Lake Tahoe. Today, you can find a charger in ranges of 2 to 3 miles.

California Funds More Charging Stations

California is expected to require 1.2 million chargers to meet the demand for 7.5 million electric vehicles by 2030.

In 2022, California received $56 million in federal infrastructure funding to build more charging stations. While charging stations in many parts of the US are in their infancy, California has taken the electric vehicle revolution seriously.

In Lake Tahoe too, we have seen a surge (no pun intended) in charging stations around the lake. Tesla has installed several supercharging stations that are open 24 hours and free to the public. Many resorts offer charging stations for guests that are not open to the public.

SavMart and EVgo

SavMart expanded its marketing program with electric vehicle (EV) charging partner EVgo Inc. in the Lake Tahoe basin. Called EVgo Advantage, the platform allows drivers to use promotions delivered from EVgo once a charging session is initiated at a participating store.

EVGo Charging Stations can be found in Soda Springs, Truckee, and Tahoe City. Charging stations are also located at the SavMart stores and in Incline Village, Nevada. For more EVgo locations, click here.

Resorts with Private Charging Stations

In addition to public charging stations, many resorts offer private charging stations for their guests. This includes:

The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe
13031 Ritz Carlton Highlands Ct, Truckee, CA 96161
Free for guests staying or using resort services only. Not available to the public. Seven Tesla-specific charging stations.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe

As the Lake Tahoe basin becomes more crowded with full-time residents and visitors, electric vehicles will mitigate pollution that eventually settles into the lake. Driving your electric vehicle to Lake Tahoe no longer involves ‘range anxiety’ and visitors will find numerous options to charge their vehicles.

The Tahoe community remains committed to preserving the clarity of Lake Tahoe. If you are looking for a resort area that is ahead of the curve in green energy, Lake Tahoe is the perfect destination.
